Costa from Gardening Australia on Facebook (May 10 2025) reminds us that it is International Compost Awareness Week from May 4 – 10 2025.
He gave an interesting fact:-
“One Teaspoon of compost contains an estimated surface area of 5 square metres.
This is crucial for improving soil structure and nutrient availability by enhancing microbial activity and water retention.”
Can you believe that – one teaspoon! Imagine what you can do if you compost every day. Need some ideas to start?
- Dig a hole in the garden (far enough down so the dog or other animals don’t dig it up!) and put all your fruit and vegie scraps in and then cover it up. Too hard?
- Buy a bucket with a lid small enough to put on your kitchen counter and put your fruit and vegie scraps in there. Add some ripped up paper/ junk mail/ notes etc. Then dig a hole in the garden and bury it when the bucket is full. Too hard?
- Buy a worm farm and feed your scraps to the worms. In return you get worm wee that you can dilute and water your garden. And you get their droppings that you can use in your garden/ pots as soil additives. Too hard?
- Go to one of the local community gardens and offer your bucket full of scraps. Or even join one and start growing!
- The obvious one is to buy a composting bin – make it easy on yourself and get a cylindrical one that you turn with a handle.
