Monday Nature Walks

,

Are you interested in getting into the bush to observe the native plants that grow in our nature reserves, forests and conservation parks?  Join us for Monday Nature Walks, where the focus is the plant-life that surrounds us, from tiny flowers and fungi to giant eucalypts.

Who are we?   A small group of FBBGSA members who meet each Monday morning to walk and talk plants.  We are not experts; we all share what knowledge we have. No obligation – come along to any walk that interests you.

Where do we walk?   Our home-ground is the Mount Cooth-tha Gardens. We walk there often. We also venture into the many reserves around Brisbane, Logan, Redland, Ipswich and Moreton (e.g. Toohey Forest, Moggill Conservation Area, Karawatha Forest, D’Aguilar National Park, to name a few – we have walked in more than 60 different places in the last few years).  Most nature spots are close by – sometimes we car-share and travel a bit further.

Any pre-requisites?  You need to be an FBBGSA member.  A moderate degree of fitness is required as some walks include some climbing and traversing rough terrain.  But we travel quite slowly, due to our tendency to stop and examine plants that interest us!  This is not walking for exercise.  We generally only cover about 4km, often less, due to how much there is to look at.  Wear hiking boots or other sturdy shoes.  Bring hat, water bottle, and binoculars if you are interested in the birdlife as well.

How does it work?  The location for each Monday is planned only a few days ahead.  You will get an email on Saturday (usually) with information about where we plan to walk on Monday, where to meet and how to get there. We usually meet at about 8.30 am or 9 am and finish each walk around 12 midday.  This varies, depending on the place.  We finish up with a coffee break, either at a local café or BYO in a park.  When there is travel involved, car-sharing is available.
